Setting Up a Microphone

Before you can set up your microphone, you need to connect it to your computer or Bluetooth and then install any drivers. Windows will most likely automatically find and install the required drivers. If that fails, you may need to visit the manufacturer’s site for the correct drivers.

Make sure that your microphone is connected to your computer.

• Select Start > Settings > Sound.
• Go to Sound settings > Select your input device. Next, select the mic/recording audio device that you wish to use to connect.

Using the Control Panel

1. Type the words Control Panel into the search box at the top of your taskbar. Cortana can be spoken to by saying Control Panel, and Cortana will respond, All right, I’ll Open Control Panel.
2. Tap on the Hardware or Sound icon in the Control Panel.
3. Click on the Sound tab to open the sound window. Click on the Recording tab.
4. Right-click the recording device to which you wish the system to default and then click the option to set a default microphone device.
5. Click OK to set the default microphone.

Using Settings

You can search for Settings by entering it in the search bar or clicking on the Windows button and then the gear (usually at the bottom).

1. Click on System to open Settings.
2.  Click sound on the left side.
3.  Select your input audio device using the drop-down menu to the right.
4.  You can also check your microphone volume to ensure quality voice reception. For further adjustments or tweaking of sound window quality, choose App volume and device preferences.
5. These Settings allow you to adjust the Master Volume setting of your default microphone. Do not increase the volume too much, as this can cause jarring for other people on the call. Keep repeating sentences until you feel comfortable with stability and balance.

Using Voice Recorder

Windows 10 comes with a voice recorder app that can check the sound quality and response of an external microphone. It can be accessed via the Start menu search.

1. Windows 10 will be empty and without options. Click the icon.
2. To activate the voice recorder, speak a few sentences. When you are done, click the Stop recording menu.
3. You can then play the recording and hear your voice.
4. If your recording is clear, you have correctly configured the microphone.

Windows Vista might not be able to recognize that the microphone is activated at this point. We need to make Windows Vista recognize the tone and voice we use.

• Click on Set up Microphone in the Ease-of-Access windows.
• Select the microphone device you are currently using and click the Next button.

There are a few guidelines that can be followed to ensure a positive user experience. Since I selected the Headset microphone, the indications in my case are as shown in this image.

Close the wizard setup if this happens. After you’ve checked that the microphone audio device is enabled, you can open the wizard again.

For example, in my case, the microphone was activated on the headset when I reached this step. It doesn’t seem like it works. I have to restart the wizard set up after a few taps on my microphone.

If you have read the text and clicked the Next button, the wizard setup will inform you that the microphone setup is done. You will also be prompted to set up Speech Recognition by pressing Finish.

How to set up a microphone on Windows 10

1. Once the microphone has been plugged in, click the speaker icon in your taskbar to select Sounds.
2. Select the Recording tab in the Sounds windows to view all connected microphones. You can select the Default Device if it has not been established.
3. To open the Speech Recognition windows, on speech recognition select the Mic option and then choose Configure.
4. To open the Microphone Setup Wizard, select Set up microphone.
5. To continue the wizard, select the microphone type you have connected to your computer. Continue reading the instructions and then click Next.
6. Next, use the Microphone Setup Wizard screen to speak into the mic while you read the text. If your mics functioning correctly, the soundbar should move downwards as you talk.
7. Continue to select Next. A confirmation window should appear confirming that your microphone has been installed. To close the Microphone Setup, select Finish to end the installed process.

How to set up a Bluetooth Microphone on Windows 10

1. You must pair your Bluetooth microphone or headset with a Bluetooth mic purchased from a Bluetooth manufacturer to work with Windows 10.
2. Next, ensure that your Bluetooth mic is on. Click the Bluetooth icon in Windows Taskbar to add a Bluetooth device.
3. Make sure that the Bluetooth toggle switch in the Bluetooth & Other Devices window is turned on. Next, click Add Bluetooth or another device.
4. Select Bluetooth in the Add a Device windows 10.
5. In the next window, your Bluetooth device should be listed. If your Bluetooth microphone doesn’t show up, verify that it is on and ready for pairing. Once it is listed, choose the device to begin the pairing process.
6. After pairing your audio device, you will see confirmation windows 10 confirming that your microphone is ready for use. To exit the screen, select Done.
7. Right-click the sound icon in Windows Taskbar and choose Sounds > Recording. Your Bluetooth microphone should now be listed. You should now see your Bluetooth microphone listed.
8. Talk to your Bluetooth microphone. If the soundbar is to the right of your mic, it should show green bars to indicate that it’s functioning and ready for use.

Test Your Microphone

You can test your microphone is working properly or not, regardless of whether you use the wizard we discussed in the previous section.

• Right-click the sound windows icon on the taskbar to open the Sounds window. Click the Sounds command.
• Next, click on the Recording tab to view a list of all available devices.

Now speak into your mic. Look for the green bars that move when you speak. Your device is working properly if the bars rise with your voice.

You might consider increasing your microphone volume if you can clearly see the green bar moving but not much else.

This is done by increasing the sensitivity of the microphone so that it can pick up more sounds. Click the microphone from the Recording tab and then click Properties.

You can adjust the sensitivity of your microphone by going to the Levels tab.

If the bars are not rising, you might need to reinstall your drivers.
