Run Windows Troubleshooter
Windows has a variety of troubleshooters that can quickly diagnose and fix many computer problems. If your microphone is having problems, the troubleshooters on your computer can be really helpful. They can’t fix every problem, but they can tell you if there’s something wrong with your computer, how it works, or how you’re recording sound.
- Click Settings, type troubleshoot, and then select Troubleshoot under settings.
- Select Recording Audio from the Find and Fix Other Problems section. Follow the steps and click Run troubleshooter.
- Check to see if your internal or external microphone trouble is fixed by Windows Update Troubleshooter. Also, try the Speech Troubleshooter to fix your microphone.
Check the Sound Settings Menu
Restart your computer before you begin troubleshooting. A simple reboot might fix the temporary microphone problem.
If restarting your computer doesn’t help, the next thing to check is the sound settings in Windows. This is the first place to look if your microphone isn’t working, especially if it’s not working at all.
These settings can be found by going to Settings > Sound.
Click the dropdown box below. Choose your input device. Choose the microphone you wish to use to record sound.
You will also see other inputs, such as the built-in microphone in your laptop or webcam.
You can skip sections if you don’t find the microphone you are looking for.
Once you have selected the correct mic input, you can speak into the mic. You should then see the test your microphone bars move up and down.
Go to Settings > Update and Security > Troubleshoot> and select Recording Audio. Windows will scan for common problems and try to fix them.
Click the Device properties link in the Input section of the Sound page to test your microphone.
This will open a new page that allows you to rename the input. This makes it easier for future reference.
To prevent the microphone from appearing, you can check the Disable box. On the Levels tab, you can also change the volume to adjust the mic’s input.
The App volume and device preferences menu are located at the bottom of the main Sound page.
This menu allows you to select a different output or input device for each one of your open applications. Take a look at this page to ensure you have the correct mic for each app.
It’s a good idea to close all apps that you don’t use. Multiple apps running at the same time do not have access to the microphone. Make sure that your microphone might not work correctly in the app that you want.
Confirm that Apps can Access Your Microphone
Windows 10 offers a Privacy menu that allows you to block apps accessing sensitive data, such as your microphone and camera.

To take a look, head to Settings > Privacy Click Microphone under App permissions on the left sidebar.
To allow apps access to the microphone, ensure that the slider under Allow apps to access. Next, look at the list to verify that you want to allow apps to access your microphone.
The first list and slider are only available for Microsoft Store apps.
Continue scrolling down to find a section called Allow desktop apps to access your microphone. Double-check to make sure the slider is on.
Although you cannot toggle the access to the microphone individual desktop apps, you can see the last time they accessed your mic. This will help you determine if the app is correctly detecting your mic.
Review your List of Recording Devices
Next, check your available input devices to see if your mic is still not functioning correctly.
This can be done by clicking Manage sound devices on the Sound Settings page. However, it is easier to use the Control Panel.
To open the control panel, click the Start menu button. Next, change the Category to the upper-right to Small icons. Once you have viewed all the options, select Sound.
Switch to the Recording tab in the resulting windows 10. This shows all microphones that are connected to your computer.
Click anywhere to confirm that Show Disabled Devices is checked.
Check the list of microphones to make sure your primary microphone isn’t disabled. Right-click the mic and select Enable.
The mic’s bar will light up when you speak into it to test if your microphone is working.
Adjust the Microphone Settings for Your Game
You’re pretty sure that your microphone problem is not a microphone hardware issue, and you have already ruled out other apps.
You should look in your game settings (or any other software) to find out if there are ways to adjust the mic options.
Verify that the game is using your primary microphone. Most video games allow you to lower the volume of your microphone input.
This setting can be adjusted to reduce clipping, which could cause the mic to cut in and out. If others think your voice is too loud, increase the volume.
If the game offers a microphone test option, you can check how your voice sounds within the game.
If the agent is evident, test your microphone, it could be due to a network problem, but it cuts out in-game.
Your router may have blocked the port used by voice chat. This can be fixed by consulting our router tips.
You could use Discord, a third-party voice chat app, to talk instead of waiting for the game to fix your mic problem.
Make sure your Microphone is Enabled
Make sure that your microphone is turned on in Windows 10’s operating system. It could be that the Microphone is disabled or turned off. This is why the microphone not working. Go to Settings and search for Privacy.
Find and select the Microphone section in the Privacy settings windows 10. Ensure that the toggle under Let applications use my microphone has been switched to On.
You must be sure that your microphone is not being used by an app other than your own. Check the list for the app you are looking for and make sure the toggle switch is set to On. This should resolve the problem with your Microphone.
Set Your Microphone as the Default Device
You might have to manually set the default device for the external mic if it is connected to your computer. Right-click on the volume/speaker icon and choose Recording devices in the contextual menu.
Select your Microphone from the Recording tab and click Set default to make it the default recording device. This should resolve the problem.
By right-clicking on the empty spot in the Recording tab, you can turn on or off the Show Disabled Devices and Disconnected Devices options. You will see the microphone and be able to set your microphone as the default device by following the steps.
Reinstall Or Update Your Microphone Drivers
Device drivers are pieces of software that tell the operating system and other software how to work with certain pieces of hardware.
Because hardware and software are often made by different companies or people, the driver works as a bridge between the two.
Drivers allow software and hardware to communicate seamlessly. Without drivers, computers will not be able to send or receive data properly in most cases.
The device may not be working properly if the driver isn’t installed. It is possible to either uninstall the driver and let Windows 10 reinstall it automatically or manually update the drivers.
- Search for the device manager and click on the Device Manager result.
- Double-click the Audio inputs & outputs section in the Device Manager window. Click the arrow to expand it.
- Right-click your Microphone (or recording device) and choose Uninstall driver in the contextual menu. Windows will automatically reinstall missing drivers when you restart your computer.
Windows 10 may fail to reinstall the driver if it is not possible to do so. To force Windows 10 to reinstall, go to Device Manager and right-click on the computer name.
It should be the first item on the list. Windows 10 will scan for hardware changes and install the missing drivers.
To make sure your microphone works well, you need to update something called drivers. You can do this by clicking on the recording device in Device Manager and choosing “Update driver” from the menu that pops up. You can update the drivers by yourself or let the computer do it automatically.
You will be asked if you want Windows to look for the latest driver software immediately or if you want to look for it yourself.
Windows will search your computer and the Internet for your device’s most recent driver software if you choose the first option. You will need to manually locate and install drivers if you choose the second option.
This option requires that you have previously downloaded drivers to your computer or a USB flash disk.
Third-party software like Snappy Driver Installation can also be used to update and install drivers. To download the software, you will need to have an internet connection.
Restart Windows Audio Service
Windows Services, also known as services. MSC is used to alter the way Windows services run on your computer. These services run available programs and manage many settings and resources.
For security, troubleshooting, and performance-related reasons, you can modify the settings of a service. Windows Audio manages audio for Windows programs.
Audio devices and effects that depend on this service will stop working if it is stopped. It will cause all services that depend upon it to stop working.
- To restart Windows Audio services, press Windows key + R on your keyboard. Or type run in Search to open the Run dialog box. Type services. MSC, then press Enter on the keyboard or click OK.
- You will find a list of Windows services in the Services window. Right-click the Windows Audio service to locate it. Choose Restart in the contextual menu.
- Alternatively, you can choose Stop from the contextual menu and then right-click on it again to select Start. This should resolve the problem with your Microphone.
- If this does not work, right-click on the Windows Audio service and choose Properties on the levels tab.
- Check the Windows Audio service properties to see if Automatic has been set. To save your changes, change it to Automatic. Try restarting the computer to see if it solves your mic problem.

Restore your System with Restore Points
System Restore creates restore points. A restore point is a set of system files that System Restore has stored at a particular date and time. System Restore will restore everything to a previously saved restore point.
However, you must have one. System Restore cannot revert to any restore points if there isn’t one. You must have created a restore point to use this tool. This feature restores your system to its previous state without affecting files or data.
This method should only be used if your microphone not working in the last few days. This could be, for example, if the problem started after you upgraded Windows.
You might fix the problem if you have system restore points that were made before the Microphone started to malfunction.
- Start Run by pressing Windows Key + R. Type rstrui.exe to restore your system. Click OK or press Enter in the Run dialog box.
- Click Next in the System Restore window.
- You will be able to see the list of restore points that have been created. Check the box to show more restore points. You should see more restore points.
- Depending on the time it was created, you can choose the best restore point. Click Next. You should not choose a Restore Point if the microphone problems were already present.
- Confirm the restore point. The computer will then be restored to its previous state before the event described in the Description. Click Finish if you are satisfied with your selection. The system restoration process will start.
