Design and Remotes
The speaker is a rectangular, black block measuring 6.8 by 4.0 by 4.0 inches (HWD) and similar in size to the Sonos One. The sides and front are covered with grille cloth. The top and back panels feature a matte black rubber finish.

Simple Setup of Stereo Speakers
The TV Wireless Speakers, unlike almost all other TV speaker systems, are a stereo separation pair. Each unit is roughly the same size as a Sonos One, measuring 6 inches in height. When you pair the teams, they are automatically paired from the box.

How Do They Sound?
TV Wireless surround system is a great performer. It can also play music better than you would expect from a set designed to be used with a budget TV.
It made my feet tap harder than my Yamaha YAS108, which is my favorite all-in-one bar. The Rokuwireless speakers produce a beautifully open surround sound that is hard to match with Yamaha’s boxy Yamaha. This was no doubt due to the Roku’s discrete left and proper channels.
The TV Speakers were great for listening to music. I found straightforward rock or folk songs to be the best. They have a punchy surround sound and better stereo separation than best soundbar under $500.
The Yamaha, on the other hand, sounded smaller and had less flair. Vocals and, by extension, dialog sounded great and crisp. The cracks began to appear when the wireless speakers were introduced to more complex tracks and those with deep bass.
Roku wireless speakers have a limiter that cuts off excessive bass response. I was able to hear it clearly during the final song of Life by The Beta Band.
The Roku wireless speakers performed the descending bass line much better than any other tests, but the volume increased in the quieter sections after the bass stopped.
However, that test consisted of many individual notes and instruments with bass transients, such as a bass drum that could make my Roku rattle like a snare.
This was especially evident when watching movies with profound sound effects, including superhero movies. Low-frequency information can become smeared or rattled, making it surround sound like a rainmaker. It wasn’t for this effect that Yamaha’s generally muted audio performance stood out.
Saving Private Ryan was 4K. The opening scenes of the bloodshed at Omaha Beach felt stale. Explosions were more muffled than explosive, and the ricochets seemed less deadly than they were.
The sound was lacking in emotional weight. At the 10 minute mark, Tom Hanks looks at the scene and notices that the speakers are rumbling like a train carriage window pane.
In this scene, the Yamaha pulled ahead of the Roku. Although the sound was lacking in bass, it did its best to portray the danger faced by soldiers.
The speaker had a realistic sound effect, and the gunshots were very real. The tiny speakers rattled at the same level as the Roku, but it was not as noticeable.
The Omaha landing was possible only after switching from the Yamaha to the $150 Vizio SB3621N -E8. Although it did not have the same dynamics or zing as the Yamaha, the Vizio made explosions sound like they were. The Vizio clarified that the famous sequence was supposed to simulate ringing in your ears, not rattling carriages.
HDMI? Who Needs It?
The most apparent advantage is wireless connection—at least, wireless communication to your Roku TV. To connect the speakers to your Roku TV, you don’t need any connection, HDMI or otherwise. There’s also no cable connecting the left and right speakers. That’s unique, but each has a detachable power line since each speaker is powered individually.
That might be an issue if you don’t have enough electrical outlets in the area where your TV is located, but a multi-outlet surge protector (or, at the absolute least, a power strip) will solve that problem. The speakers connect to your Wi-Fi network through an integrated dual-band 802.11ac adaptor and offer Bluetooth 4.2 for wireless music streaming from your smartphone or tablet. The aptX codec is not supported by the speakers.
The second most significant benefit Roku’s speakers provide is superior stereo separation compared to the average entry-level soundbar. The disadvantage is that you only receive stereo. Roku does not try to simulate surround sound. There is no mechanism for adding more speakers—wireless or otherwise—for that purpose (unless you also have a Roku soundbar and reconfigure the Roku TV Wireless speakers as surround channels beginning in February 2020).
The speakers generate a broad sound stage with a distinct center when necessary. I’ll take it over phony surround sound any day. Roku refused to address a query concerning the potential of adding a subwoofer in the future, although it cannot be done now (this will change with the forthcoming Roku update).
In a briefing before my review, a Roku representative said that the firm chose to design traditional speaker cabinets so that they could utilize bigger drivers. A soundbar cabinet would need to be put in front of the TV (at least when placed on furniture).
